We see empires rise and fall. We remember and uphold some remarkable men and women, great leaders of their time; fierce individuals. We forget the slave, the peasant, the worker, the men and women on whose backs all empires were built.
The island is a hand, like that of a hitch hiker’s with thumb leveled. This painting is a reminder that one should perhaps more often let go of the things that constrain us, in our movements, actions and thoughts.
Our ancestors trekked through the vast emptiness of the land with ox wagons.
Driven by an acute awareness of the definitive termination of his short stroll on the planet, and driven simultaneously by a restless thirst for power and control and a burning desire to explore
a moment of clarity, wherein all make sense as a coherent whole. Somewhere between free will and destiny, two forces battle for sovereignty. What we perceive as our reality is perhaps the dust kicked up by this eternal battle, beautifully tinted by the setting sun. Sometimes free will wins, sometimes destiny, but for the most part they’re inseparably intertwined in their fiery tango.
This was the first collaboration, with the client as a partner in the conceptualization and creative process.
